Hueston Woods Covered Bridge

Built: 2012
Length: 108 ft.
Builders: J. Stephen Simmons
Project cost (2012): $1,997,500

The structure originally at this location was erected in the late 1920s and had numerous repairs to keep it in operation. On June 23, 2012, over 100 years since the last covered bridge was built, the all-new Hueston Woods Covered Bridge was dedicated.

Palmer Engineering teamed with Smolen Engineering to design the replacement structure for this deteriorated truss bridge over Four Mile Creek in Preble County. Extensive redesign of the approach roadway was necessary to meet current design standards. The Palmer design team worked closely with the County to mitigate environmental constraints, coordinate construction schedules, and secure right-of-way and environmental permitting.

This bridge is a single span modified Burr Arch truss construction similar to the Roberts Bridge, and it has a span of 108 feet over Four Mile Creek in Hueston Woods State Park. The bridge features covered walkways to promote pedestrian traffic, a timber-covered structure, and reinforced concrete foundations.
